Defiant Beauty - Beauty Despite Cancer

Many of you will have seen our Beauty Despite Cancer ‘Defiant Beauty’ range and we thought we would tell you a bit more about them. Designed by Jennifer Young in conjunction with North Staffordshire University Hospital’s Oncology team they have been specially designed for those going through cancer treatment. This means that they are effective at supporting the side effects of Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy. Jennifer set out to create a beautiful range ensuring that they were:

• Natural
• Organic
• Soothing (sensitive skin)
• Calming (reactive skin, itchy skin)
• Anti-aging/rejuvenating – ravaged and aged (stress and depleted oestrogen)
• Luxurious
• BEAUTY

The oncology team then set the following extra requirements for the range to make them safe:

• No natural oestrogens
• No fragrance
• No water (creams)
• No antioxidants
• No plastic

Some of you may be wondering why the extra rules. The answer is that not all cancers are the same. Some tumors have oestrogen receptors which means that they are effectively fed by oestrogen. This leads to tumour growth. Therefore to make the products safe for everyone oestrogens were out.
So where is oestrogen found? It’s a naturally occurring human hormone. However, there are sources of Oestrogen-mimicking compounds and our bodies don’t know the difference. These include:

• Plants – phytoestrogens e.g. Soya and Aloe Vera
• Pharmacological – contraceptive pill/HRT
• Man-made chemicals – xenoestrogens
  • Agricultural spraying, industrial processes
  • Household products – plastics, cleaning agents, pesticides, herbicides, cosmetics

• No. Jennifer could have gone down the clinical trial route but decided against it. She felt that women take enough medications as part of their treatment and she wanted her range to feel just as luxurious as any of the other high end brands out there.
